"A Healing Process"
by Richard Bird
As you may have experienced, whether it's your first or 500th class with me, the healing process isn't always "rosy".
When you set your intention and breathe it into your body and soul the magic begins.
However, sometimes things may seem to get worse before they get better. Here's what I mean.
In my own experience during Forrest Yoga Teacher Training (September 1999) my intention was to heal my knees. I had always been active and had great leg strength. I never thought I'd have knee problems.
After 11 years of "stretchy type yoga" and hours of daily meditation my knees were coming apart. My torso would turn one way and the knee would go the other.
The result . . . I had to kneel down and skillfully slide the meniscus back into place. It wasn't fun.
So when I set my intention and proceeded with the Friday evening class, Saturday morning - then in the Saturday afternoon training session I began to lose feeling in both my legs and feet.
Initially I was a little concerned I hadn't gotten enough protein or proper nutrients. But at the same time a little voice inside said "it's OK, this is part of the healing you've asked for".
During our afternoon break I even had one of the other students walk with me just to make sure I made it back to class.
Later that evening as I was walking from my hotel to a restaurant everything seemed in slow motion. Ten blocks seemed like two miles.
I felt like I was in quicksand. My hips and pelvis were very unstable. It seemed to take forever to get were I was going. I was even concerned that if the police saw me I would be cited for "walking while intoxicated".
I had a good meal and a good night sleep. Magically the next day my knees were stable and once again strong. Since that September day in 1999 I have never experienced instability or my knees going out again.
So my point - the healing process is not always as clear, quick and easy as you would like. Often there is a bit of uncertainty or a gray area. While you are actually getting better and healing, things may seem to be getting worse.
During your healing process it's important that you continue to come to class. Trust in the process and minimize your fear. If you need to reach out for reassurance give me a call and ask questions. (970.366.2947)
